Art and Spirituality

Art and Spirituality

There is a profound connection between art and spirituality. When a person is engaging in an artistic endeavor, they are participating in an act of creation. In that moment of creation there is a natural connection between the artist and the Creator of all that is. In essence, the artist becomes the Creator. One of the reasons why we are here on Earth is to participate in the ongoing creative process of the universe. We are aspects of the Divine and we expand the wisdom and experience of the Cosmic Creator through our own creative process.
Art is a way of approaching life, not just the expression of artistic skills. The experience of the act of creativity and its relationship to the Divine is not only for those who describe themselves as artists. One can experience the beauty of creation through performing any creative act.
If you are someone who does not consider yourself artistically inclined, it might require some creative transposition to think about this material as it relates to your own creative process. We all have access to the experience of the creative whether it is in cooking, designing something, creating beauty through order, or any other creative process. What is your creative passion?
When we are deep in the creative process we enter a world of our own; it is as if nothing else exists except for the stroke of the brush, the movement of the arm, or the musical line being played. It is a complete immersion, a fusion with the art itself. In this fusion, we can lose our sense of the ego, or individuated self, and merge with something larger. In merging with this great force, profound healing is possible.
In the artistic process, it is as though we enter a reality or dimension where all possibility exists. We take the raw materials of paper, clay, musical instruments, whatever our media might be, and combine that with the little or great skills that we have. We apply our time and attention, and voilà! The masterpiece is brought to manifestation. What is created is not any one of these things but something greater that is beyond the sum of its parts.
Within the creative process, when the linear and liminal meet and communicate, we enter a creative zone where our personality and ego-awareness are lost in the act of doing. In that loss of ego-self we are merged into the divine and refined by it. Many artists find that their best art happens in this state. It can feel almost like flying or surfing on a wave of the creative force, and it is a high like none other!
